Permanent makeup is a form of cosmetic tattooing that uses carefully placed pigment to enhance the eyebrows or lips. Depending on the technique, it can add soft definition, recreate the appearance of brow hairs, restore a faded lip border, balance uneven color, or neutralize cool and dark lip tones.

At Alena Brow Art, every treatment is designed around the client’s natural anatomy and intended to heal softly rather than look like obvious makeup.

Sensitivity varies from person to person, but most clients describe the discomfort as manageable. A topical anesthetic is used when appropriate, and additional numbing may be applied during the procedure.

Lips are generally more sensitive than brows, but the experience also depends on individual sensitivity, skin condition, and the treatment being performed.

Any procedure that breaks the skin carries possible risks, including infection, irritation, allergic reaction, scarring, and uneven healing.

Treatments are performed by a licensed New York City tattoo artist using sterile single-use needle cartridges, disposable supplies, barrier protection, and professional infection-control practices. Clients must disclose relevant medical conditions, medications, allergies, and recent treatments before the appointment.

Fresh permanent makeup always appears stronger than the healed result. Brows may look darker and more defined, while lips may appear brighter, warmer, or more saturated. Mild redness, tenderness, or swelling may also occur.

The color softens as the skin heals and any flaking comes away naturally. Brows, Lip Blush, and Ombre Lips generally require about 4–6 weeks before the healed result can be evaluated. Lip Neutralization requires at least 8 weeks.

Permanent makeup does not have a fixed expiration date. Many clients consider a color refresh after approximately 1–2 years, but pigment may remain visible for longer.

Fading depends on the technique, pigment color, skin type, sun exposure, skincare, lifestyle, metabolism, and individual healing. Complete disappearance within a specific period cannot be guaranteed.

 

No. A touch-up is optional and should be based on the healed result rather than how the area looks immediately after the first appointment.

Some clients may want more density, definition, or color after healing, while others are satisfied after one session. Touch-ups for brows and standard lip treatments are generally evaluated 4–8 weeks after the initial procedure. Lip Neutralization follows a longer, multi-session schedule.

Permanent makeup gradually becomes softer and lighter rather than disappearing all at once. The way it fades depends on the pigment, technique, skin, sun exposure, skincare, and individual healing.

A refresh should be considered only when the existing color has faded enough to accept more pigment without creating unnecessary saturation. The goal is to preserve the ability to adjust the shape and color as the face and personal preferences change.

Most clients do not need to take time off from work or normal daily activities. However, the treated area will go through visible healing, usually including temporary darkness, dryness, and light flaking during the first 7–10 days.

Swimming, soaking, steam, saunas, direct sun exposure, makeup on the treated area, and picking or peeling must be avoided for the period specified in the aftercare instructions for your procedure.

Permanent makeup can add definition to sparse or uneven brows, restore missing sections, soften minor asymmetry, improve a faded lip border, balance uneven lip color, or neutralize naturally cool and dark lip tones.

The goal is subtle enhancement, not changing the natural features or creating perfectly identical brows or lips. Permanent makeup also does not add physical volume and does not replace lip filler.

Powder Brows create soft definition through layered shading and can work well for many skin types, including oily, combination, mature, and textured skin.

Nano Brows use fine machine-created hairstrokes and are generally better suited to normal or dry skin with minimal texture and smaller pores. The final recommendation depends on your skin, natural hair growth, existing brow density, desired result, and any previous permanent makeup.

Lip Blush creates a soft, even wash of color across the lips while restoring subtle definition.

Ombre Lips use variations in color density to create a gradient. The color may be more concentrated around the outer areas or toward the inner center, depending on the selected style.

Lip Neutralization is a gradual color-correction process for naturally dark, cool, uneven, or melanin-rich lips. It commonly requires several healed sessions before the desired color can be introduced.

Previous permanent makeup must be evaluated before booking. In some cases, new work can be performed if the existing pigment is light enough and the shape and color are compatible with the new design.

Dark, saturated, migrated, or significantly discolored pigment may require removal or correction before a new procedure. Please send clear, unfiltered photos taken in natural daylight, without makeup on the area, for an initial assessment.

Every appointment begins with a consultation and detailed mapping. Brow shapes are designed around facial structure, natural hair growth, asymmetry, skin type, and personal preferences. Lip treatments remain within the natural lip border and are planned around the existing anatomy and pigmentation.

Pigment colors are selected according to natural coloring, undertones, existing pigment, and the desired healed result. The proposed shape and color plan are discussed before the procedure begins.

A full consultation and design process are included in every procedure appointment, so a separate in-person consultation is usually unnecessary.

Permanent makeup cannot be performed on clients under 18, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, on actively infected, sunburned, irritated, or damaged skin, or while the client is acutely unwell.

Certain medical conditions, medications, allergies, recent procedures, or a history of delayed or abnormal healing may require postponement or medical clearance. Please review the full contraindications listed on the page for your chosen service. Never stop prescribed medication without approval from your healthcare provider.

After booking, Square will automatically send you the Permanent Makeup Client Intake & Health History form. Please complete it as soon as possible so your health information, medications, allergies, recent treatments, and any previous Permanent Makeup can be reviewed before your appointment.

Before the procedure, you will also receive an Informed Consent specific to your selected service. Please review and sign it before your appointment.

If you have previous Permanent Makeup, microblading, cosmetic tattooing, or removal in the treatment area, please send clear, unfiltered photographs taken in natural daylight before booking.

Final suitability and the treatment plan are confirmed after your forms have been reviewed and the treatment area has been examined in person.
